The Graduate Teacher Programme at Queen Elizabeth's School

The graduate teacher programme (GTP) is on-the-job training allowing graduates to qualify as a teacher while they work. This route into the teaching profession suits recent graduates who do not want to join a PGCE course or people seeking a career change. Graduate teachers are able to earn while they train and the training is tailored to the trainee’s individual needs.

OEM meeting

Entry to the GTP at Queen Elizabeth’s is highly competitive and places are allocated after interview in the Autumn Term to start the following September. Applications can be made to the school at any time during the academic year although most applications are submitted during the Autumn Term. Those short listed are usually invited for interview between October and December, which leaves successful candidates sufficient time to secure a place on a course with a GTP provider. We currently work with the following providers: the Institute of Education (University of London), LONOCO (London North Consortium) and the University of Hertfordshire.

Requirements of candidates

  1. A good honours degree in the subject to be taught
  2. A firm commitment to a career in the teaching profession
  3. A capacity for hard work
  4. Strong organisational skills

The application process

  1. Email a completed application form to recruitment@qebarnet.co.uk. All applications will be acknowledged.
  2. Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend an interview.
  3. Selected candidates will be offered a conditional place so that they can then apply direct to a GTP provider.
  4. Once a place is secured with a GTP provider, the candidate will be employed as an unqualified teacher at Queen Elizabeth’s, initially on a fixed-term one-year contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the GTP take?

Training takes from three months to one school year full time, depending on your previous teaching experience. Most Graduate Teachers have never taught before and, therefore, take a full year to complete the training programme.

What qualifications do you need?

You need qualifications at least equivalent to a UK bachelors degree and GCSE grade C or above in mathematics and English.

What support is available?

All Graduate Teachers at Queen Elizabeth’s are employed as additional members of the teaching staff, so it is not necessary to take on a heavy teaching load immediately. Each GT is assigned a subject mentor within his/her department and a professional mentor from the Senior Leadership Team. There is a full programme of induction and professional development during the training year.

Is there any financial support available?

Queen Elizabeth’s will pay you an unqualified teacher’s salary.
