Headmaster's update

The long Autumn Term began with the School still in celebratory mood following August's excellent public examination results. Our 2013 leavers matched the very considerable achievements of the previous year's record-breaking cohort, with the proportion of A*-B grades at A-level remaining above 98% this year. The GCSE results were equally impressive: the proportion of A* grades (66%) set a new QE record for the second consecutive year.

New Dining Hall
and Café 1573 open


The opening of the new Dining Hall and Café 1573 close to the end of the Autumn Term represents a milestone in the implementation of the School's estates strategy. These openings mark the completion of the second phase of this major building project at the rear of the Main School Hall.

Both facilities feature interior design with graphics that reflect the history of the School.

Presidency is worth
the hard work


Harry Peto (OE 2005-2012) has been elected President of the undergraduate student body at his Cambridge college.

Harry, who is reading Politics, Psychology and Sociology at Clare College, is juggling his studies alongside his responsibilities as President of the Union of Clare Students (UCS), the equivalent of other colleges' Junior Common Room.

Jerome aims to build
on Karate Club's varsity winning streak


Jerome Singh (OE 2004-2011) has been appointed President of Cambridge University Karate Club for 2013-2014.

His appointment follows a highly successful term of office as Men's Captain in 2012-13, during which he led the men's team as it triumphed in the varsity fixture for the seventh consecutive year.

BBC man Peter helps budding journalists at QE

OE Peter Sumpter's successful career with the BBC has resulted in the School getting involved in an award-winning national project aimed at developing journalistic skills among 11-16 year-olds

Peter (1968-74), who is the Craft Lead of the Technical Managers for BBC TV news, has worked alongside a huge number of famous people, including Nelson Mandela, top musicians and various American presidents.

Mustali’s School friends turn out in force for wedding


Old Elizabethans were much in evidence at the wedding of Mustali Sarkar (2000-07).

Mustali graduated from Imperial College with a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2011. Since then, he has been working at ExxonMobil in its Gas & Power Marketing Division. He has held roles in the Business Planning & Analytics team and is currently in the Supply & Trading team, helping to provide 6% of Europe's total natural gas demand.

Christopher Mason's recent wedding became a reunion for his School contemporaries from the late 1980s and early 1990s, with OEs prominent among the bridal party and guests.

Chris (OE 1987-94) and his brother Andrew (OE 1985-92) got engaged within weeks of each other, with Andrew marrying Kay in north Devon, followed last month by Chris's wedding to Sharon.

Retired top lawyer hopes
to reconnect with School


A former senior lawyer and leading international manager with BP is re-establishing his links with QE, where he has been both a pupil and a Governor.

Richard Newton (1956-1964) was School Captain and was also captain of both cricket and rugby during his time at QE. He led the Hertfordshire U19 cricket team as well as representing the South of England, and played U19 rugby for both Hertfordshire and South East England. He served as a Governor in the 1980s.
