“We need a certain proportion of humanity to be willing to take the risks”: international AI entrepreneur returns to QE

San Francisco-based artificial intelligence expert and entrepreneur Sachin Dev Duggal shared with current QE pupils the “key life lessons” he has learned.

Still only 34, Sachin (OE 1994–2001) has already founded and led three multi-million dollar businesses and studied at world-leading institutions.

Yet, by his own admission, he was not the brightest in the year when at QE. Moreover, he was never an athlete nor was he in the “cool group”. In a special lecture to Years 8, 9 and 10, he urged boys to be “proud of failure” since “that is where you learn” and he remembered with gratitude certain “anchor teachers” who had played a significant part in forming him.

Sachin recently re-established contact with the Headmaster, Neil Enright, and a visit to his alma mater was speedily arranged. He was accompanied to QE by his wife, Pooja, who is herself an entrepreneur.

Mr Enright said: “I am most grateful to Sachin for giving his time to talk to current Elizabethans: his lecture was at once realistic and very inspiring. It is always tremendously valuable when our illustrious alumni come back and share their often-considerable insights with the boys.”

Sachin’s talk focused on the “four pillars of humanity” – persistence, dreaming, communication and risk.

He recommended “thinking differently about what you want to do”, looking beyond conventional paths. He recalled that his mother had thought him mad to leave the security of a job as an advisor and consultant for Deutsche Bank in order to establish a start-up business. (He had first contacted Deutsche Bank when he was 17, saying: “Give me a go.” They invited him for an interview and, despite their telling him he was too young for the internship he wanted, he ended up working for them for five years.)

Such an approach had taken him from his background in an ordinary, middle-class family, for whom a visit to central London constituted a trip out, to a life that now straddles both the Atlantic and the Pacific – he works in San Francisco, Los Angeles and India.

He currently heads two companies. SD Squared uses AI to build apps or online marketplaces for other businesses – “a platform that does exactly what an in-house engineering team would do without any of the cost of running and managing one”, as the company’s publicity puts it. The second company, Shoto, employs AI to help people get the photos they want from friends – “sharing photos never gets you the photos you want; if you’re lucky someone may share back. With Shoto, your friends can’t see what you send if they don’t also share back”. It then automatically organises photos into albums and trips, all arranged in a timeline.

From 2004 until 2012, Sachin ran Nivio – a start-up he founded which provided a virtual computer (a Windows desktop) streamed over the internet to any device allowing the use of applications on demand – allowing Windows apps to run on iPads, for example.

Based on his own experience, he believes that academic and career development do not have to be sequential but can run in parallel: he was with Deutsche Bank throughout his Information Systems degree at Imperial and, since then, Sachin studied Design Thinking with BJ Fogg, a professor from Stanford on design thinking, followed by completing an executive masters programme run between MIT and Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO).

Dreaming, he said, is “the most important thing” and “what gets you up in the morning”.  In a nod to his own field of AI, he predicted: “You won’t need to be able to code in future; you’ll just need to be able to dream it.”

Persistence is also essential: he cited not only his perseverance with Deutsche Bank but also subsequently with his own businesses: “When you don’t get the first investor to say ‘yes’…but you go on to raise $20m and build a $100m company.”

Communication is important because it enables you to pre sent yourself well and explain your dreams. Debating skills are valuable, Sachin stated, but he felt saying “umm” was not a fault as it showed some vulnerability: “This is useful in getting people on-side!”

Boys also need to develop an appreciation of risk, he urged. “If you love risk, you’ll do more of it. If you fear risk, you’ll do less of it’. Don’t shy away from the rugby tackle because you anticipate getting hurt. We need a certain proportion of humanity to be willing to take the risks.”

Sachin stated that these four “pillars” complement each other and lend each other their strength. There were, he said, ample opportunities at QE for boys to develop in these areas: in so doing, they could go far.

“What does this all have to do with AI?” he asked in conclusion. “AI can’t do any of these things [but] it can just about do everything else,” he said. It can compute better, make better predictions and store more.

In a Q&A session after the talk, Sachin said boys should look to the silver screen: “What Hollywood dreams, we build 20 years later,” he said, giving as examples space travel, robots and, of course, AI.

 

New Government league tables confirm QE’s position as one of the country’s leading schools for the progress made by its pupils.

The new tables are based on the Government’s preferred Progress 8 measure, which shows the improvements made by children across eight key subjects between the end of primary school and GCSE.

For the second consecutive year, Queen Elizabeth’s School’s Progress 8 score of 1.16 tops the table of all boys’ grammar schools. QE is also 12th overall out of all schools and colleges in England.

Headmaster Neil Enright said: “QE has become well known for consistently producing GCSE and A-level results that are among the very best in the country across both the state and the independent sectors.

""“As we are a selective school at which there is great competition for places, our intake in Year 7 is made up of very bright boys. However, as these tables conclusively show, that is not the whole story: we certainly do not ‘coast’, riding on the natural talent of our pupils. On the contrary, our excellent, inspirational teaching combined with a meticulous approach to all aspects of education mean that we are able to maximise the very considerable potential of our boys.”

""In 2017, 100% of QE’s 181 Year 11 pupils achieved grade 5 or above in their English and Mathematics GCSEs and 100% achieved the Government’s English Baccalaureate (EBacc) performance measure, which requires an A*–C pass (or grade 4) in English, Mathematics, History or Geography, the sciences and a language. Of the 11 schools ahead of QE in the Progress 8 league table, only one – The Tiffin Girls’ School in Kingston upon Thames – matched the first figure and none had an EBacc figure as high as QE’s. Nationally, this year’s figures reveal an overall drop in EBacc attainment from 24.5% last year to 23.5% in 2017.

""Newly adjusted figures for this summer’s GCSE results at QE reveal that in addition to the 100% pass rate for GCSE, 70.9% of the examinations taken were awarded A* grades (or its equivalent, grades 8 and 9 in the new numerical grading system used for English and Mathematics). The Mathematics results were particularly noteworthy: 70% of Year 11 achie ved the new, highest-possible grade of 9 in the subject, with 96% getting grades 8 or 9 (equivalent to A*) and all 181 boys achieving grades 7-9 (equivalent to A*and A).

QE old boy Akshay Ruparelia has been making national and international headlines with the success of his online estate agency.

Akshay (OE 2009–2016), who was featured on this website during the summer, has seen his business go from strength to strength: many reports, including a piece in the Daily Mail, focused on doorsteps.co.uk’s current valuation of £12m and that it reportedly became the 18th-biggest estate agency in the UK this week.

Journalists also pointed to his age – Akshay is 19 – with the Daily Mirror, for example, citing Akshay’s belief that he is Britain’s youngest self-made business millionaire.

""Reports focused on how Akshay’s experiences at QE, which he left only last year, had influenced him. Mirror reporter Jeremy Armstrong wrote that his School friends had nicknamed him Alan Sugar and that the idea for doorsteps.co.uk came to him while he was preparing for his financial studies examinations when he read a biography of Ryanair founder Michael O’Leary. “Mr O’ Leary began by selling flights for just £4.99 and his point was that if you deliver what you say you will, you hook people in and your business will work. So I took that same logic and applied it to estate agency. Research showed online estate agencies were still charging homeowners between £800 and £1,000. I knew I could do it for a fraction of that.”

""Indian broadcaster NDTV stressed Akshay’s ethnic background under the hea dline, “Indian-origin teenager, 19, is UK’s youngest millionaire”. Many journalists also reported his family circumstances: Akshay’s parents – his 57-year-old father Kaushik, who is a care worker, and 51-year-old mother, Renuka, a teaching assistant – are both deaf.

Notwithstanding his paper wealth, Akshay has yet to “cash in” personally and does not, for example, own a car because of the high cost of insurance for him. Instead, he says he is focusing on growing the business, which is reported to have sold £100m-worth of properties and to have more than 1,000 homes for sale on its website.

Queen Elizabeth’s School has awarded its first colours for drama, with seven senior boys being honoured.

The recipients, from Years 11 to 13, not only demonstrated commitment to drama for themselves, but also supported younger boys.

Headmaster Neil Enright said: “The School has for a long time awarded colours for extra-curricular activities such as sport, music and chess. With drama now so strong here, we felt the time had come to recognise commitment and accomplishment in that field in the same way. My congratulations go to these first seven recipients: I hope that their example will spur others on to follow their lead.”

The drama tie was awarded to:

QE Drama Co-ordinator Elaine White said: “All these boys have shown their dedication and commitment to drama in School. Not only do they support the younger boys by leading warm-ups and rehearsals, they are also skilled at coaching and directing performan ces.

“They are committed to moving forward with their own skills and regularly perform themselves. A number of them have also achieved, or are undertaking, the Trinity College Silver Arts Award, a level 2 qualification.”

""Mark recalls that he was first enamoured of drama when he saw the effort and passion that went into a School play during his first few months at QE. He went on to win the Best Actor Award for Year 7. “I have always tried to embody this same spirit and passion for acting in every performance I give, regardless of the character that I play,” he said. Over the years, he has taken a number of leading roles, including Blind Pew in Treasure Island, Fagin in Oliver Twist and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice.

Keenan added: “I have been lucky enough to perform in many professional theatres, such as the Arts Depot, Finchley, and more recently in the West End Wyndham’s Theatre as part of a Shakespeare Schools Festival charity event, acting alongside Lee Mack, Hugh Dennis and many other stars. Only through drama would I have been given these great opportunities, which I will always cherish.”

The tie itself is navy blue. It bears the School crest, with ‘Drama’ written underneath.

Stepping beyond human knowledge: one giant leap for machines

Old Elizabethan Demis Hassabis’s company, DeepMind, has made another major advance in artificial intelligence: its supercomputer program has taught itself to become the world’s best Go player, without any guidance from human beings.

DeepMind’s original AI program, AlphaGo, achieved prominence last year when it beat Lee Sedol, world champion at Go, the ancient and complex strategy game. To achieve the feat, the team at Google-owned DeepMind had programmed AlphaGo with millions of moves by past players. It took months for the machine to get to the point where it could take on a professional player.

However, the latest version, AlphaGo Zero, was taught the rules of Go, but given no extra instructions or examples. Instead, it learned to master Go simply by playing millions of games against itself. Within three days, it was good enough to beat the original program by 100 games to nil, and it has gone on to discover game-playing strategies and principles, some of which were genuinely novel.

Demis (OE 1988–1990) co-founded DeepMind in 2010. He sold it to Google for a reported £400m in 2014, but remains its chief executive.

He told journalists this week: “We’re quite excited because we think this is now good enough to make some real progress…even though we’re obviously a long way from full AI. Ultimately, we want to harness algorithmic breakthroughs like this to help solve all sorts of pressing real-world problems,” said Hassabis.

“If similar techniques can be applied to other structured problems, such as protein-folding, reducing energy consumption or searching for revolutionary new materials, the resulting breakthroughs have the potential to drive forward human understanding and positively impact all of our lives.”

DeepMind has already begun using AlphaGo Zero to study protein-folding and has promised it will soon publish new findings. Misfolded proteins are responsible for diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cystic fibrosis.

Demis’s colleague, David Silver, has overseen the team working on AlphaGo. “The new version starts from a neural network that knows nothing at all about the game of Go,” he said.

“The only knowledge it has is the rules of the game. Apart from that, it figures everything out just by playing games against itself. It shows it’s the novel algorithms that count, not the compute power or the data,” said Mr Silver, who pointed out that in just a few days a machine had surpassed the knowledge of this game acquired by humanity over thousands of years.

“We’ve actually removed the constraints of human knowledge and it’s able, therefore, to create knowledge itself from first principles, from a blank slate,” he added.
