Secondary Transfer Entrance Test FAQs

As many questions parents/guardians ask are similar, we have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions to support parents/guardians to understand the entrance test process for Queen Elizabeth’s School, Barnet. These are designed to complement but not replace the full statutory admissions criteria which can be found at www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/

1. How and when do I register my son for Queen Elizabeth's School entrance test?

Parents must complete the School’s online entrance test registration form available via our website from early May for Year 7 entry in September the following year. On accessing the system, parents are required to register and create an account before starting the registration form. The registration form must be completed and submitted before the published deadline in July. More details can be found at www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/admissions/

2. What opportunities are there to visit Queen Elizabeth's School before the entrance test?

Our Open Day for prospective parents is usually held on the first Thursday in July. Details on how to book the Open Day are published online after the registrations for the entrance tests open, towards the end of May at www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/admissions/

3. When and where do the entrance tests take place?

The tests are usually held in September over two days at Queen Elizabeth’s School, Queen’s Road, Barnet, Hertfordshire. EN5 4DQ. If you have registered your son, he will be invited to sit a single session, either in the morning or the afternoon, as predetermined by the School. We cannot accommodate date, morning or afternoon session preferences. For candidates requiring special adjustments, it may be necessary to allocate a date and time outside of the main test dates, to be determined by the School on an individual basis.

4. Are adjustments available for children with special educational needs (SEND)?

When a pupil with a special educational need takes our entrance test, our practice is always to aim to make the same provision as is made for him during assessments at his current school. Having made any adjustments which are appropriate for the candidate to sit the test, the marking process for such pupils is then identical to that for all others, and the minimum score required by the governors is also the same. A Parent/Guardian should complete the Child’s Medical and SEND Information section of the registration form and download the SEND Questionnaire for your son’s Primary School to complete and return by email to the Admissions Office enabling a decision about reasonable adjustments to be made.

5. Is there more than one round?

No. We only have one round of testing in a single session.

6. What subjects are tested?

Our entrance test consists of two multiple-choice format papers in English and Mathematics sat in a single session.

7. Are past papers available?

No. Sample papers that may assist your preparations can be found on our website at: www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/sample-test-papers/

8. When will I receive the date of my son’s entrance test?

An email giving details of the precise arrangements for the entrance test will be sent out the week before the test. You should make arrangements for your son to be available on either day.

9. What if the entrance test date clashes with another school’s entrance test?

You should make arrangements for your son to be available on your son’s invited test day at Queen Elizabeth’s School and contact the other school to reschedule your son’s test date. We are unable to accommodate date changes due to an entrance test clash.

10. What if my son is unable to attend the entrance test as he is attending his Year 6 residential trip?

Please email the Admissions Office with supporting evidence such as a school letter and we may offer him the reserve date subject to appropriate evidence received.

11. What if my child is unwell on the day of his entrance test?

Please email the Admissions Office on the morning of his test date. Supporting documentation such as medical evidence should also be submitted promptly thereafter and we will follow up accordingly after the test date. We may offer a reserve date if supported by appropriate evidence.

12. What should my son wear for the entrance test?

Your son should wear clothing that he feels comfortable in. He does not need to wear his school uniform.

13. What should my son bring to the entrance test?

It is essential that your son brings a printout of the emailed Entrance Test Invitation, which contains a code unique to your son, to have on his person whilst on the school premises. The School will provide all the necessary stationery and writing materials. Your son is welcome to bring a plastic, transparent water bottle, ideally with a non-spill lid. Only bring essential medication.

14. What should my son not bring to the entrance test?

Your son should not bring his own pencil case. Mobile phones, smart watches, other electronic devices or wearable technology should not be brought into the exam. He should not bring any food into the school, unless a snack is required for a pre-approved medical reason. We do not require photo identification.

15. Is there a snack break?

No. We would like to suggest that you ensure that your son has had sufficient to eat and drink before he arrives at the school to take the tests.

16. Can I park and remain on the school premises during the test?

No. A very large number of boys will be sitting the tests, and for reasons of pupil safety, cars will not be allowed onto the school grounds. As most areas of the School are being used for the tests, it will not be possible for you to wait for your son on the school premises.

17. Where should I park?

Those attending the test are encouraged to travel by public transport wherever possible. The School is located in a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) meaning that there is no parking available in the surrounding roads. Those visiting the School should only park where it is safe and legal to do so. The Spires Car Park (about a 15 minute walk away) can be a good option. Those attending the test must not park at Barnet General Hospital, where spaces are needed by staff, patients and their visitors. Attendees are encouraged to plan ahead and leave themselves plenty of time, as the area can get very busy.

18. How are the tests marked?

The answer sheets are marked electronically using well-established, highly accurate, market-leading software supplied by the test provider.

19. Are the scores age standardised?

The scores achieved are standardised by the company who supply the tests, taking account of the ages of the candidates. The scores from the two tests will be combined to produce a single, overall entrance test score for each candidate. It is the standardised scores that are then reported to parents. We do not quote a maximum standardised score for the tests. The process of standardisation specifically ensures that neither advantage nor disadvantage arises as a result of the month in which candidates were born, so that candidates born in each month of the year are treated equally.

20. When will we receive results?

Entrance test results are shared with parents by email in early October. Parents will also be able to log in to their account and view the results after the results have been communicated.

21. What score does my son need to achieve?

Those candidates achieving a combined score of 225 or higher will be deemed to have met the standard required by the Governors to be eligible to be considered for admission to the school. Historical data of the lowest scores achieved that have gained admission to the school are   available on our website at www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/admissions-information-parents/. Once you have been notified of the outcome of the entrance tests, if you wish to apply for a place for your son at Queen Elizabeth’s, you must complete a Common Application Form, which can be obtained from your local authority, naming Queen Elizabeth’s School.

22. How many places are available?

The School’s Published Admission Number (PAN) is 180.

23. Does distance or catchment affect admission?

Queen Elizabeth’s School has no catchment. In the event of two or more applicants scoring the same mark, the rank order for allocation of places will be determined by the distance measured in a straight line between the address point for the child’s home, supplied by Ordnance Survey, and the main School gate, with the closest given the highest rank.  It is therefore at this point that your address may make a difference.

24. Do you give priority to Pupil Premium candidates?

No. Admission is based solely on entrance test results.

25. Do you have a sibling or multiple birth policy?

No. Admission is based solely on entrance test results.

26. Do you have music, sport or drama aptitude tests?

No. Admission is based solely on entrance test results.

27. Once I receive the results, do I need to complete any further forms?

Yes, with your Home Local Authority. All applicants for places at the school must complete a Common Application Form and return it to their home local authority within the deadline required.  This can vary from one local authority to another. On this form you will be able to state the names of the schools to which you are applying in order of preference. The local authority will look at your rank order if more than one application which you have made is successful. You will be offered a place at the school which you have ranked highest amongst those for which your application meets the admissions criteria. You are therefore strongly advised to rank the schools to which you are applying in your genuine order of preference. The School does not require a Supplementary Information Form.

28. How do I contact the Admissions Office?

Please read carefully the Admissions Information and Criteria and Admissions Guide for parents on our website at www.qebarnet.co.uk/admissions-information/

If you need to contact the Admissions Office, please email [email protected] including your child’s name and date of birth.
